Background

The release of Indiana's Civic Health Index showcased how important civic knowledge is to the development of active citizens, and how few civic education opportunities are available to most teachers and students.

The Indiana Supreme Court is committed to helping educators identify curriculum materials that will help fill this gap.  In April 2012, the Court hosted its first civic education teacher workshop.  That workshop focused on the free materials developed by retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s iCivics project.  In 2013, the Court held a second workshop, which focused on civic education materials. Collectively these materials were called the “Justice Case Files," and they were developed by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC).

Workshop

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, the Court will hold its third workshop. The workshop will take place in downtown Indianapolis from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The morning sessions will feature information about problem-solving courts, juvenile and family matters, and the appellate process. At the conclusion of these concurrent sessions, participants will attend an oral argument in the Supreme Court Courtroom followed by the lunch with the justices and other representatives from the legal community. The afternoon session will feature media who cover the courts and an optional tour of the State House.

Lunch is included and Professional Growth Point certificates will be mailed following the program.

To register for this civic education workshop, please contact Dr. Elizabeth R. Osborn, Coordinator for Court History and Public Education Programs, at elizabeth.osborn@courts.IN.gov or (317) 233-8682.  Registration for the workshop will close on Thursday, February 27 or when the workshop is full.
