Sen. Merritt presided over ceremonies marking Indiana’s 192nd birthday on Thursday, December 11, 2008. Annual Statehood Days are conducted each on December 11 in the Statehouse Rotunda. During the ceremony the winner of the annual “What Indiana Means to Me” essay contest is honored and the original 1816 and 1851 editions of the state constitution are placed on display in the rotunda for all Hoosiers to see and enjoy. The 1851 edition is left open to section 9, which guarantees every Hoosier the right to a free public education.
Sen. Merritt meets with local realtors in the Senate Chamber to discuss issues regarding property taxes. In particular, he stressed the importance of a constitutional amendment to permanently cap property taxes for homeowners at 1 percent of assessed value.
