Obsolete First Search Component Expires June 30th On June 30, 2011, the Indiana State Library will discontinue the Indiana group-view search function, including INCat, on First Search. It has become obsolete due to enhancements to WorldCat that allow for location limiters in searches. In 2010, around 45,000 searches were conducted using Group Views amounting to over $2 per search. These searches account for a very small percentage of overall First Search usage. The change will go unnoticed by the majority of Indiana First Search users and will not affect the overall functionality of First Search.
The State
Library will continue to purchase Indiana's statewide First
Search license at a cost of over $300,000 per year, which
includes First Search, Ebook Database Index and Clase
Periodica components. Application Deadline Approaches for NEH Lincoln Exhibit The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with the National Constitution Center and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), is accepting online applications for a large-scale tour of the traveling exhibition “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” through May 5 at www.ala.org/civilwarprograms. Eligible institutions include public, research and special libraries; historical societies; museums and civic, community and heritage organizations. Funding for the exhibition and tour is provided by a major grant from NEH. Using the U.S. Constitution as its cohesive thread, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” offers a fresh and innovative perspective on the Civil War that brings into focus the constitutional crises at the heart of this great conflict. The exhibition identifies these crises—the secession of the Southern states, slavery and wartime civil liberties—and explores how Lincoln sought to meet these political and constitutional challenges. Two hundred sites will be selected to host the 1,000 square foot exhibition for a period of six weeks each from September 2011 through May 2015. Each site will receive a $750 grant to support expenses related to exhibition programming. Participating institutions are expected to present at least two free public programs featuring a lecture or discussion by a qualified scholar on exhibition themes. All showings of the exhibition must be free and open to the public. “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” is supported by NEH’s We the People initiative, which aims to stimulate and enhance the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture. For more information, including project guidelines, programming resources and the online application, visit www.ala.org/civilwarprograms. Participants Sought for Statewide Resource Sharing Committee The Indiana State Library is establishing a statewide Resource Sharing Committee to advise and assist in resource discovery, interlibrary loan/borrowing arrangements and library delivery services. The committee’s role would include encouraging and supporting lending practices and statewide resource models in Indiana. The committee’s composition will represent a cross section of the Indiana library community. Currently the State Library provides subsidies for the INfoExpress delivery service to all participating libraries, and pays for IN-Share (ILL program) and the statewide First Search license for all Indiana libraries. If you would like to be considered as a committee member, please compete this survey by Monday, April 18, 2011. The committee is tentatively scheduled to begin holding meetings in early May. |
