Biographical Note:

Elias W. H. Beck was born in 1822 and worked as a physician.  He served as a surgeon with the 1st Indiana Regiment in Texas and Mexico during the Mexican-American War and was also a surgeon with the 3rd Indiana Calvary Regiment and U.S. Army of the Potomac in Virginia and Maryland during the Civil War.  He married Frances Milroy on October 28, 1848. Elias W. H. Beck died on October 1, 1888.

Walter Beck was born about 1872.  He was the son of Elias W.H. Beck and Francis Milroy.  He served as a physician with the 13th Minnesota Infantry Regiment during the Philippine insurrections.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains correspondence written by Elias W. H. Beck to his wife and father-in-law Samuel Milroy during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.  Also included are letters written from Walter Beck to Frances Keith during the Philippine Insurrections; Beck’s photography from the Philippines and Japan is also included.
