Biographical Note:

Irene Adair is the great-granddaughter of Semira Ann Hobbs Phillips.  Adair, from Des Moines, Iowa, was an avid genealogist interested in tracing the roots of her family.  Adair thought highly of Philips and her achievements and is the author of the biographical sketch of Philips.

Semira Ann Hobbs Phillips was born on May 19, 1826, near Greenfield, Indiana.  Phillips moved to Iowa in 1843 and married Thomas Correll Phillips in 1846.  Phillips career training was a teacher.  She was chosen to teach at the first school in Mahaska County, Iowa in the fall of 1845.  She taught reading, spelling, writing, geography, arithmetic, and English grammar.  Philips had a long career as a teacher and eventually received many awards and honors for her great teaching ability.  Philips died on February 27, 1912 and is buried in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a biographical sketch of Semira Ann Hobbs Phillips.  The sketch details Phillips’ life from birth, marriage, career, and death.  Philips’ great-granddaughter compiled the sketch.
