Biographical Note or Organizational History:

James K. Bigelow was born October 17, 1833 in Bellbrook, Ohio. He attended the University of Louisville, School of Medicine and the Hospital Medical College of Louisville. Bigelow was married three times the last being to Mrs. Eliza Vail of Keokuk, Iowa with whom he had two children, Jenie born in1864 and Mary born in 1870. During the Civil War he was assigned to the 8th Indiana regiment as an assistant surgeon and was promoted to full surgeon on June 6, 1863. On August 28th Bigelow left the Army and went back to private life in Indianapolis. He was associated for several years with Dr. Bob Todd. He was a Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the state medical society. Bigelow also wrote “An Abridged History of the Eighth Indiana Volunteer Infantry; from its organization April 21, 1861 to the date of reenlistment as Veterans January 1, 1864.” He died on June 1, 1886.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains a letter to J.K. Bigelow from his colleagues letting him know how much they appreciate his work while working at the Port Hospital of Savannah, GA. On the back of the letter are two of J.K. Bigelow’s personal cards.
