Biographical Note:

Parley and Bathsheba Parker Howlett lived in Vermont and New York. Parley Howlett was born in 1754 in Shaftsbury, Vermont, and served in the American Revolution. He settled in Howlett Hill, in Onondago County, New York, in 1797, and died there on July 29, 1803. His wife Bathsheba was born in Connecticut and died in 1837. They had five sons and three daughters.

Their son Parley Jr. was a leading salt manufacturer in Central New York.

Two of the authors were DAR members and gave their Howlett Family descent. Elsie Howlett Tracy descended from Parley through his son Parley Jr. Jane L. Howlett descended through Parley’s son Seneca.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains an eight-page typed Xerox copy of the family tree was prepared in 1926 by Elsie Howlett, with the assistance of Jane L. Howlett and Dr. William Howlett Garner. It begins with Parley Hewlett and lists the children by his wife Bathsheba: (1) Eunice; (2) Christiana; (3) Parley II; (4) Herman; (5) Martha; (6) Seneca; (7) Parker; and (8) Daniel. The descendants of Parker Parley are given from page four to the end.     

One page is a newspaper article from the Post-Standard of Syracuse, New York, from 1952, entitled “Howlett Hill Church Renovated, First Since 1821” and a short article entitled “Howlett Born in 1754.”

Jane L. Howlett prepared a one-page document on March 18, 1961, giving the transactions recorded in the Onondaga County Court House at Syracuse, New York, from 1810 through 1867 regarding the Howlett Family.

One page is a reprint entitled “Historic Central New York” with a sketch of the Howlett Hill Community Church, which was built in 1821. The publication is unknown. One page lists tombstone inscriptions in three New York cemeteries. One page gives Parley Howlett’s Revolutionary War service.
