Biographical Note:

Daniel Henry Chandler was born about 1829 in New York to Daniel and Asenath (Wheeler) Chandler.  He married Ruth A. [maiden name unknown] before 1850, and they had at least eight children.  Chandler was a blacksmith, and served in the 5th Indiana Battery Light Artillery from 1861-1864 in that capacity.  Chandler died October 25, 1908, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of the handwritten Civil War memoirs of Chandler as well as a letter written to Chandler from his son George detailing George’s visit to the sites of battles in which Chandler participated.  Chandler’s memoirs are the basis for History of the Fifth Indiana Battery by D. D. Holm.
