Ira Joy Chase was born December 7, 1834, in Monroe County, New York, to Benjamin and Lucinda [Lorinda?] Chase.  The Chase family moved from New York to Illinois before settling in northern Indiana.  Chase married Rhoda [maiden name unknown] between 1860 and 1870.  A schoolteacher and minister, Chase served as chaplain of the Indiana G.A.R. during the Civil War.  In 1888, he was elected lieutenant governor of Indiana, and became governor upon the death of Governor Alvin P. Hovey on November 23, 1891.  Chase ran for governor in 1893, but was unsuccessful.  He died May 11, 1895.
