Date Announced for 16th Annual State of Indiana Holocaust Observance

Indianapolis—The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council and the Bureau of Jewish Education announced today that The 16th Annual State of Indiana Holocaust Observance will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 12:00pm in the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda in Indianapolis.

Of particular note this year is the first ever Names Reading Ceremony, which will immediately follow the Observance Program.  Reading the names of men, women, and children killed by Nazi Germany is a simple, powerful, and personal way to remember these individuals.  If you are interested in participating by reading names, please email volunteer@indyjcrc.org.

As part of this year’s program, “Honoring Our Families”, we will hear the story of one Holocaust survivor through the words of his son, Tibor Klopfer.  We will view a brief video about why we remember the Holocaust, and appreciate the music of Cantor Deb Winston of Congregation Beth Shalom, as well as violinist Ginny Womack.  Additionally, posters explaining the Holocaust will be on display.

The program will include remarks by Shelby Anderson, President of the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council, Clayton Graham, Esq., Chairperson of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission, Jamal L. Smith, Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, and Rabbi Dennis Sasso of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission was created by statute to commemorate the life and works of Dr. King.  One meaningful method of preserving his legacy is through the commission of acts of service that meet fundamental community needs.
