The Division of Hearings serves the Natural Resources Commission in the performance of its various statutory responsibilities. The most prominent of these responsibilities are for adjudications and rule adoptions. The Division also assists the Advisory Council, a board which provides advice to the Commission and to the Department of Natural Resources.
The current priority of the Division is the Comprehensive Fish & Wildlife Rules Enhancement Project.
The Division is an active participant in the development of Indiana standards for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact.
With the enactment of P.L. 84-2008 (codified primarily at IC 14-20-2-2.5), the Division and the Office of Environmental Adjudication recently drafted joint rules to allow for the consolidation of proceedings in disputes involving water quality or water quantity, where the Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management may have overlapping jurisdiction. The Commission gave final adoption to rule amendments to help implement P.L. 84-2008 during a meeting held on March 17, 2009.
