In light of the holiday season, the Family and Social Services Administration's (FSSA) Division of Aging would like to remind and encourage community members to seek out senior neighbors. There are 16 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), each representing a different region of the state, available to the community for volunteer opportunities.
"The AAAs are a great resource to help put Hoosiers in touch with those in their community or neighborhood who may need a little extra help or attention," said Division of Aging Director Megan Ornellas. "If we could each just give a small amount of our time, we could make a big difference in ensuring that no senior feels forgotten this holiday season."
The holidays can be especially lonely for those who are institutionalized or unable to leave their homes due to illness - or perhaps cold weather is keeping them indoors. Simply stopping by an elderly neighbor's to check in or say hello may be enough to raise their spirits. Keep in mind that tough economic conditions are particularly difficult for the elderly and those living on a fixed income.
Indiana's AAAs provide case management, information, and referrals to various services for persons who are aging or developmentally disabled. For more information on the AAAs or to find your local AAA, please visit www.in.gov/fssa/da/3478.htm.
