Angola-A Fremont man was arrested this morning after leading the Indiana State Police on a short pursuit in a stolen vehicle, on State Road 1 south of US 20, outside of Angola.
According to Detective Harry Nix, at approximately 9:20 am, a white male, armed with a shotgun, forcibly entered an occupied residence in the 200 block of CR 55, southwest of Hamilton in DeKalb County. The suspect then left with the residential owner's burgundy 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SLE four-door.
At approximately 9:45 am, Master Trooper Doug Kelly observed a vehicle matching that of the stolen vehicle traveling northbound on State Road 1 near Metz Road. As he turned on the vehicle, the driver sped off-road a short distance before traveling southbound on State Road 1. The vehicle finally entered a private drive in the 3000 block of south State Road 1 at which time the driver exited the vehicle and ran. Kelly exited his vehicle and gave chase and it was at this point that the suspect threw a rock which struck Kelly in the head. Kelly, both verbally and physically, attempted to subdue the suspect and was finally able to when Hamilton Town Marshall Joe Patterson arrived and used his Taser to gain the voluntary compliance needed to affect the arrest. Afterward, Kelly sought treatment at a local hospital for two broken fingers on his left hand and a large bump on the head.
Coty A. Alaura, 23, of Fremont was taken to and incarcerated in the Steuben County Jail on a preliminary charge of battery to a police officer with other charges pending. A shotgun was located in front passenger compartment of the stolen vehicle. The DeKalb County Sheriff Department is investigating the forced entry into the residence on County Road 55.
Assisting were the Hamilton Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff Department and EMS, and the DeKalb County Sheriff Department.
