Summer is fast approaching which means more traffic on the roadways with people heading for vacation destinations, family outings, and other trips. The following tips should make your summer travel much safer.
- Make sure your car is ready for a long trip. Check tires, brakes, fluid levels, battery, and lights. Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and you have all necessary equipment to do a tire change.
- Check ahead for possible construction zones along your route of travel.
- Get plenty of rest before setting out on a long trip and make rest stops periodically during your trip.
- Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle with you with such items as first aid kit, assorted tools, jumper cables, bottled water, flash lights, flares, light colored clothing or reflective vest, and a charged cell phone.
- File a "travel plan." Tell relatives or close friend where you are going, route of travel, estimated travel time, estimated return date, and give a complete description of your vehicle including license plate number.
- Make sure all occupants of your vehicle buckle up.
- Don't drink and drive.
