Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) staff will thank IndyGo Commuter Express (ICE) Greenwood riders for parking their cars and taking the bus, which helps Indianapolis' air quality. Greenwood resident Dan Murray, IDEM's Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Air Quality, is an ICE Greenwood bus rider and will be available to talk to reporters in the Meijer parking lot in Greenwood from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Reporters are invited to join Murray on the 7:30 a.m. bus ride to downtown Indianapolis.

The event is part of IDEM's Clean Air Indiana campaign to help Hoosiers understand how their individual actions can improve air quality during the ozone season, which runs from May 1 through September 30. IDEM staff is visiting locations around the state during the month of June to promote Clean Air Indiana and help Hoosiers learn about simple ways they can help improve air quality. To learn how you can help clear the air, and for a complete list of Clean Air Indiana events, visit www.idem.IN.gov/cleanair.

Known as a summer pollutant, ground-level ozone forms when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors. While necessary in the upper atmosphere, ozone is a respiratory irritant at ground level that can make breathing difficult. Children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung problems are more sensitive to ground-level ozone.

The Clean Air Indiana campaign also asks businesses to reduce ozone-forming activities from June 15 through 30, a time of summer that has historically experienced high levels of ground-level ozone.

About IDEM
