VINCENNES, Ind. - Recently employees of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Vincennes District took the day off from work and enjoyed a bright and sunny day on the Oakland City Municipal Golf Course. This wasn't just a great day for co-workers to enjoy a round of golf, but it was to also honor a co-worker that could not be with them.
On March 26, Mark Shepherdson of INDOT's Chandler Unit was killed while in a work zone along Interstate 164 (I-164) in Vanderburgh County. "Losing Mark was not just a loss of a worker for INDOT, but much more than that" stated Vincennes District Deputy Commissioner Samuel Sarvis. "Mark will be missed by many people, he was a great son, brother and employee. He was also a caring citizen who volunteered in his community. He will be missed by family and his many friends and neighbors."
Thirty three people attended the outing in Oakland City collecting more than $400 for the Shepherdson family. An outing held by the Seymour District at the Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburg contributed an additional $400. More than 40 people attended the Seymour event.
In 2008, five people were killed in a construction or maintenance zone, down slightly from seven in 2007. INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through all work zones. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot.
