IDEM reaches out to Hoosiers at environmentally-friendly dry cleaner

Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) staff talked to Hoosiers Saturday as they came inside the Nu-Yale Cleaners in Floyds Knobs and thanked them for doing their part to keep Indiana's air clean.

"Nu-Yale Cleaners is going above and beyond to help improve Indiana's environment, which is why we are here during the Clean Air Indiana campaign," said Dan Murray, assistant commissioner for IDEM's Office of Air Quality. "The company has added cutting-edge equipment to improve dry cleaning and eliminate the use of chemicals that can affect human health and the environment. Incorporating this green technology benefits the company, its customers and Indiana's air quality."

"We appreciate this opportunity to partner with IDEM during their Clean Air Indiana campaign," said Gary Maloney, owner of Nu-Yale Cleaners. "Our Solvair Cleaning System is the most effective cleaning system available and the most environmentally friendly. Nu-Yale is proud to offer Solvair to its customers and we're giving away coupons during the Clean Air Indiana campaign to help customers see how good it is."

The event is part of IDEM's Clean Air Indiana campaign, which asks Hoosiers to make small changes to their daily habits in order to improve air quality. To learn what Hoosiers can do to clear the air, and for a complete list of Clean Air Indiana events, visit www.idem.IN.gov/cleanair.

Known as a summer pollutant, ground-level ozone forms when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors. While necessary in the upper atmosphere, ozone is a respiratory irritant at ground level that can make breathing difficult. Children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung problems are more sensitive to ground-level ozone.

The Clean Air Indiana campaign also asks businesses to reduce ozone-forming activities from June 15 through 30, a time of summer that has historically experienced high levels of ground-level ozone. A business can take the Clean Air Indiana Business Challenge and Pledge at www.idem.IN.gov/cleanair.
