Miss America to help open the Indiana State Fair
INDIANAPOLIS - Miss America 2009 Katie Stam will trade in her tiara for a cowboy hat on Friday, Aug. 7 as the Seymour native returns to the Indiana State Fair to assist with the fair's opening ceremonies.
"I'm always excited to come back to my home state. (The Indiana State Fair) is one of my favorite events and I enjoy taking part in the great festivities," Stam said.
In addition to the opening ceremonies, Stam also will conduct a question and answer/autograph session at 4:30 p.m. and take part in the evening Daily Parade presented by National City, now a part of PNC.
Stam has attended the Indiana State Fair since she was a little girl, and credits her 10 years as a 4-H member for helping her become who she is today.
"My years in 4-H taught me so much about community service and the importance of getting involved, which helped me to win Miss America," she said. "Being in 4-H has had a tremendous impact on my life."
Stam's favorite part of the Indiana State Fair is Pioneer Village because of the memories she has of spending time there with her family. And, like most other fairgoers, she has a favorite food stop that has become a fair tradition.
"My favorite food at the fair is anything from the pork producers - a barbeque pork sandwich or a pork burger.perfect!," she said.
Stam is Indiana's first Miss America in the pageant's 88-year history. She is a University of Indianapolis senior majoring in communication with an emphasis in electronic media.
