NEWS RELEASE: Spencer County livestock farmer certified for adoption of progressive farm practices

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) recently certified Bill Tempel, a Spencer County livestock producer, for his adoption of progressive farm practices in the ISDA Certified Livestock Producer Program.

"This program recognizes exceptional Indiana livestock producers who have proactively adopted progressive management practices to demonstrate their commitment to the environment, animal well-being and being a good neighbor," said Lt. Governor Becky Skillman.  "In going above and beyond, these producers are leaders in the livestock industry."

Lt. Governor Skillman launched the Certified Livestock Producer Program in July 2008. Indiana is one of only a handful of states to have a voluntary program that recognizes farmers for adoption of progressive farm practices and procedures in environmental stewardship, emergency planning, animal well-being, biosecurity, food safety and being a good neighbor in their community.

Tempel is the proprietor of Bill Tempel Farms, a swine operation in Spencer County. The 33 year old farm has both a boar stud and farrowing operation that includes 400 sows.

"As leaders in the state's livestock industry, our certified livestock producers are following progressive management practices and set a bar for others to meet," said Anne Hazlett, Indiana Agriculture Director. "Today we honor Bill's commitment to this level of stewardship as it is these efforts that ensure our farmers will continue to feed the world."
