The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is reviewing a closure plan submitted by U.S. Steel in compliance with state and federal hazardous waste regulations for hazardous waste surface impoundments No. 2 (HWT-2) at U.S. Steel Gary Works facility at 1 North Broadway in Gary, Ind. IDEM staff will be holding a public meeting on the closure plan at 5:30 p.m. (local time), Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the Gary Public Library, 220 West Fifth Avenue, Gary, Ind.
The public will be given an opportunity at the meeting to submit written comments about the closure plan and speak directly with IDEM staff members involved in the review. Individuals also have until 5 p.m. (local time), Tuesday, September 15, 2009, to mail or hand deliver written comments to IDEM at the following address:

The public is encouraged to review the closure plan and can find electronic or hard copies at the following locations:

. IDEM's Central File Room, 12th floor of the Indiana Government Center North building, 100 North Senate Avenue, Indianapolis. To ensure a copy is available upon arrival, individuals should contact Central File Room staff at (317) 232-8667 beforehand to make arrangements. The IDEM Central File Room is open Monday through Friday, excluding official holidays, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (local time).
IDEM will consider all public comments before issuing a final decision concerning the closure plan.
