Medical Marijuana Card No Excuse in Indiana

Lagrange County- A traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road last week led troopers to marijuana and a little more.  Trooper Chris Davis stopped the driver of a speeding Ford in a construction zone near the 131 mile marker in Lagrange County.  A records check performed by Tpr. Davis revealed that the driver, Richard L. Baird Jr., 32, of Fowlerville, Michigan, had an active felony warrant for his arrest through Colorado for burglary with assault.

Trooper Davis placed Baird under arrest for the active warrant and soon discovered that he attempted to conceal several baggies of marijuana in his pants pocket.  Baird told Tpr. Davis that he had a medical marijuana card from the State of Michigan.  In 2008, Michigan was the 15th state to adopt a medical marijuana law.  Baird claimed that he had just purchased the marijuana in Elkhart and was heading home to Michigan.  Baird was also charged with possession of marijuana and explained that the new Michigan law afforded him no protection in Indiana.  Troopers also discovered a cereal box packed full of marijuana and a digital scale in Baird's vehicle.

Baird was arrested for felony possession of marijuana, the felony warrant, and several other related charges.  Baird was taken to the Lagrange County jail.
