The Hoosier Outdoor Experience, taking place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, begins with Student Day on Friday, Sept. 25. About 1,000 third graders from the Indianapolis and Muncie areas will visit the event to explore the theme of "I am being a good citizen when I care about our natural resources."
The pre-selected classes will visit five stations to learn about forest, stream, pond and prairie habitats. Students will make a scientific notebook to record their experiences.
Each class will participate in two types of outdoor recreation experiences and practice field study skills. DNR employees and volunteers will guide students through the activities, which are based on state academic standards.
Student Day is made possible by generous contributions from the Ball Brothers Foundation.
The main part of the Hoosier Outdoor Experience is on Saturday and Sunday. The family-friendly event is the first of its kind in Indiana. Unlike at traditional trade shows, visitors will be able to enjoy hands-on experiences in a wide range of outdoor activities, such as fly fishing, target shooting, archery, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, camping and much more.
The Hoosier Outdoor Experience is presented by the Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, with sponsorship support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust; Ball Brothers Foundation; WXIN-Fox 59, Indianapolis; and numerous other sponsors.
Parking, admission, activities, demonstrations and seminars are free to the public, but online registration is required. To register, go to hoosieroutdoorexperience.IN.gov and click on the yellow registration icon.
