The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announced today that South Central Indiana Interpreting (SCII) has been named the new Coordinating Unit for the state's interpreting services. Janet Lancaster, owner of SCII, will become the coordinating unit for all Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services (DDRS), Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (BRS), Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), and Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) communication needs.
"Scheduling interpreters through a single coordinating unit will allow the state to work more efficiently and better meet the needs of consumers," said DDRS Director Peter Bisbecos. "We look forward to improving access to interpreter services for Indiana's deaf community."
SCII's contract will take effect in December of this year. The agency will work with Indiana's current network of qualified interpreters, including local freelance interpreters and interpreting agencies to meet interpreting needs. Streamlining coordination and scheduling will improve access to interpreter services and advance consumer access to Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) and Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) services.
A single coordinating unit will also ensure a more cost-effective and efficient interpreter delivery system by reducing the cost for travel and other administrative functions. DDRS currently purchases interpreter services from 14 interpreter provider organizations and 20 freelance interpreters.
