Connersville - Lt. Steve Comer, Commander of the Connersville Post, would like to announce the Connersville Post's participation in Operation Safe Family Travel Blitz. This Blitz Project will run from November 13th-29th. Last year, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, fifteen people were killed in crashes on Indiana roadways during the Thanksgiving Day driving period. More than 66% of those were alcohol related.
To help ensure the safety of all motorists during this heavily traveled holiday, the Indiana State Police will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) from 6 p.m. Operation C.A.R.E. is a federally funded program and will allow approximately one hundred fifty additional troopers to patrol area roadways over this holiday period. Officers will also participate in Statewide Driving under the Influence Project (SWDUIEP). Troopers will target impaired drivers, motorists who speed, follow too closely, make unsafe lane changes, drive aggressively, and fail to buckle up or properly restrain their children.
Troopers will be aggressively enforcing Indiana's child restraint and seat belt laws. All occupants of a motor vehicle, including pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, are required to be secured in a seat belt or child safety seat in every seating position.
The Indiana State Police encourage all motorists to observe the following safety tips:
- If you are planning to travel a long distance make sure you are well rested. A fatigued driver is a dangerous driver.
- Avoid tailgating. Remember the two-second rule.
- Make sure everyone is buckled up.
- Never drink and drive.
Lt. Steve Comer would like to remind Hoosiers "If you celebrate, make sure you have a designated driver. Also remember to adjust your speed for the existing road and weather conditions. Plan ahead and give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely."
