Rogers reappointed to Education Roundtable

Senator hopes advisory committee gives board new focus on early education

INDIANAPOLIS-A new advisory committee to the Indiana Education Roundtable will begin work this year to outline how the state's children can benefit from early education opportunities. The committee will be comprised of experts and advocates from around the state to promote early education. State Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) authored a new law earlier this year, Senate Enrolled Act 268, establishing the new committee.

Rogers has been reappointed this year to serve on the Education Roundtable, a state board made up of key education, business, community and government leaders charged with ensuring that the state has world class academic standards for student learning.

This year Rogers has also been appointed to serve on the Select Commission on Education, a new commission that has begun review of the impact of recent education reforms and their implementation by the Indiana Dept. of Education. The commission began meeting in April and has reviewed a number of topics, including letter grade designations for schools and public schools that have been taken over by private management teams, known as "turnaround academies." The commission is also expected to hold hearings on recent changes to teacher evaluations and licensing rules, clarification of school instructional expense reporting, and school corporation disannexation.

Rogers has also been appointed to serve on the Interim Study Committee on Special Group Recognition License Plates, Committee on Child Care, County Redistricting Commission, Health Finance Commission, Illiana Expressway Proposal Review Committee, Lake Michigan Marina and Shoreline Development Commission, Select Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight, and Joint Study Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Assessment and Solutions.

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation. More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at

A retired educator, Rogers represents Indiana Senate District 3 which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 3 communities include Gary, Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Ainsworth, Merrillville and Crown Point.
