Assistant Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement in response to the recent developments regarding the Department of Child Services (DCS) committee hearings.
"I'm glad to hear that the governor has acted on the controversy surrounding the Department of Child Services.
"Obviously, the governor realizes this is not a partisan issue, it is about an agency's ability to act as responsibly and efficiently as possible. Now the conversation can shift to ensuring the agency is structured in a way that solves problems, not creates them.
"I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation with DCS and moving the review of this agency forward in a way that the protection of Hoosier children remains the focus.
"It is imperative that those of us here at the Statehouse are listening to the input provided to us by stakeholders on the front lines and using their information to make sure that the protection of children in our state is as strong and respectable as possible.
"I believe we are on the right track in suggesting a direct access line for community professionals and hope that we can continue to move in a direction that gives local providers the tools and flexibility they need to protect children and families in their communities.
"While I am encouraged by the committee leaders' eagerness to address issues with the hotline, I'm hopeful that the expertise of the rest of the committee and those who have testified will be utilized in our ultimate recommendation. We must also insure that all reports concerning the safety and welfare of children are promptly and professionally handled.
Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 includes the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
