INDIANAPOLIS- State Senator Tim Skinner (D-Terre Haute) has been appointed to serve on the State Budget Committee, a bipartisan panel responsible for making a comprehensive recommendation for state spending over the next two years. Skinner was appointed by Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) and will serve as an alternate member on the committee.
"I'm honored to serve on this important committee. The state budget truly reflects the priorities of the state, and I intend to bring the concerns over past school funding cuts and social services needs to the table," Sen. Skinner said. "The state's finances are beginning to rebound and we have generous savings in the bank, so I hope to see those cuts restored."
Having served as the ranking Democrat member of the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy and a member of the Senate Education and Career Development committees, Sen. Skinner has extensive experience in state fiscal issues, including public school funding.
"I'm pleased that Sen. Skinner has agreed to the demanding assignment of serving on the State Budget Committee. This committee has the tremendous responsibility of recommending to the General Assembly a spending plan for the next state budget, and I know that Tim's experience as a legislator and as a teacher will provide good perspective to the process," Sen. Lanane commented.
The State Budget Committee began holding public hearings today on budget requests from state agencies offices, with higher education requests on the agenda for today and Thursday. Hearing will continue through mid-December. A recommendation from the State Budget Committee will be considered first in January by the House Ways and Means Committee, then by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The 118th Indiana General Assembly will reconvene on January 7 for the 2013 legislative session.
