INDIANAPOLIS (December 7, 2007) - Governor Mitch Daniels today sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) appealing a decision to deny federal assistance for Hoosiers in north central Indiana devastated by a tornado that occurred on October 18.
"Local government and voluntary agencies are doing all they can to support the people and businesses affected, but there's more to be done," said Daniels.
On November 2, the governor sent a letter to President George W. Bush to request federal assistance for Hoosiers affected by the October 18 tornado (with winds of more than 158 miles an hour) that swept through parts of Elkhart, Kosciusko and Marshall counties, impacting most significantly the city of Nappanee and damaging homes and businesses.
Sixty-four homes were destroyed, 138 sustained major damage, 27 had minor damage and 134 were affected. Also, 109 businesses sustained physical damage.
