WINONA LAKE, Ind. (May 4, 2007) - Governor Mitch Daniels today joined community leaders and officials from Lake City Greenway to officially open Heritage Trail, a 1.8 mile section of new greenway. Just before the trail dedication the governor announced that Warsaw-based Zimmer, Inc. will make its third expansion in three years in Kosciusko County and create more than 140 new jobs.
"Jobs announcements and announcements like this one are really not unrelated to each other," said Daniels. "Among many, many reasons we seek to make Indiana known as the 'State of Trails' is that it will enhance the quality of life and promote wellness."
Lake City Greenway is a proposed eight-mile trail that is part of a plan to connect lakes and parks throughout Kosciusko County. Heritage Trail is one of two sections of the greenway recently completed. It was built utilizing approximately $1.25 million of federal, state and local funding.
"Trails like this make us more attractive to companies coming to Indiana and growing in Indiana. It's another asset to tout as we work to bring jobs, hope and opportunity to this state," said Daniels.
In May, 2006, Governor Daniels announced that Indiana would double its financial support of trails development from $10 million to $20 million annually through a combination of state and federal funding sources. In December, the state finalized a comprehensive statewide trails development plan that will be implemented over the next 10 years with the goal of placing every Hoosier within 15 minutes of a trail.
