OMB Director Charles Schalliol to step down

INDIANAPOLIS (May 14, 2007) - Following major successes assisting Governor Mitch Daniels in achieving an honestly balanced budget, shepherding the $3.8 billion Major Moves initiative and crafting financial and legislative solutions for Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center, Office of Management and Budget Director Charles Schalliol has informed the governor he will resign from his position to return to the private sector.

"More than any other individual, Chuck Schalliol deserves credit for helping Indiana achieve an honestly balanced budget. He's set the bar incredibly high by helping us end a streak of deficits and reverse the state's fortunes," said Daniels.

Schalliol was the governor's first cabinet appointment and brought together, for the first time, all seven of Indiana's financial and auditing functions - including the Indiana Finance Authority, department of revenue, public employee and teacher retirement funds and local government finance.

"The governor directed me to build a department that measured and tracked performance, and we've put tools in place to do that," said Schalliol.  "For example, we have made dramatic progress in lowering school construction costs."

In 2006, for the first time, statewide new school construction costs are less than the national average.  This resulted in total approved construction projects declining to $755 million from $1.03 billion in 2005.

Schalliol also noted the state's post-amnesty tax program has collected $19.2 million from more than 10,000 individuals.

"I'm pleased these and other efforts have improved the state's credit ratings," he added.

Schalliol's resignation will be effective in June. The governor has not named his replacement.
