Dale, IN (June 7, 2007) - Governor Mitch Daniels today unveiled a new highway sign to honor Abraham Lincoln, the nation's 16th president. Signs proclaiming "Lincoln's Boyhood Home" are being placed at state highway entrances to Indiana as part of the state's celebration of Lincoln's 200th birthday.
"Lincoln's character and values were formed during his youth in Indiana," Daniels said. "As president, these traits helped lead our nation through the greatest strife in its young history."
In 1816, at age seven, Abraham Lincoln arrived with his family in Spencer County within just a few days of Indiana becoming the 19th state. Lincoln lived in the area until he was 21 years old. His mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, is buried near the family's home site in southern Indiana.
"Many from outside Indiana may not realize Abe spent his formative years in our state," said Connie Nass, executive director of the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (IALBC). "These signs are one way to make visitors more aware of Indiana's influence on this great man."
The IALBC is paying for the 66 signs and crews from the Indiana Department of Transportation will install them over the next few weeks. Lincoln's 200th birthday is on February 12, 2009 and the IALBC will be sponsoring several events to coincide with this occasion.
