INDIANAPOLIS (July 27, 2007) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita will join elected officials from around the nation in the coming week as they participate in the next Aspen-Rodel Fellowship in Public Leadership event – an Asian seminar in China and India.
Rokita was selected in 2006 to participate in the bipartisan program developed for top young political leaders and elected officials. Sponsored by the Aspen Institute, the series gathers officials from various levels of public service throughout the United States to explore their roles in government and to discuss principles in American democracy -- all for the purpose of building stronger bipartisan leadership. The invitation-only program engages its members in three weekend-long seminars and two overseas trips over a period of two years.
The group will spend three days in Beijing, during which time they will meet with government officials and attend briefings on topics such as economic development, political activism, energy and the environment, and intellectual property rights. The group will then fly to New Delhi for two days of meetings with Indian government and industry leaders.
Following the conclusion of the seminar, Secretary Rokita will remain in India for three additional days of meetings, coordinated with the assistance of leaders in Indiana’s Indian community.
"The India Association of Indianapolis is excited and encouraged by Secretary Rokita’s interest in building a stronger bridge between India and Indiana," said Raju Chinthala, president of the Association. "This mission has the potential to strengthen ties between Indian businesses and our state, and to create opportunities for future investment here in Indiana. Improving cultural understanding and opening the door for exchanging ideas is a critical first step, and we applaud Secretary Rokita’s willingness to take that step on behalf of Hoosiers."
