Opportunity offers current Indiana University student chance to
experience state government
(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Zachary Ahonen of Greenfield is currently completing the prestigious 2009 Indiana Secretary of State Fellowship Program. The summer-long program selects college and university students from around the state and allows them the opportunity to experience state government first-hand by rotating through the Secretary of State’s divisions.
“Zach exemplifies the kind of top-notch students we have here in Indiana,” Secretary Rokita said. “I feel that he is an individual who will help guide our state and country with his desperately-needed leadership in the coming years, and I’m thrilled to have him here, as he is a valuable addition to our office.”
As a member of the Fellowship Program, Ahonen is currently seeking degrees in political science and economics with a minor in English. He participates in intramural sports, AmeriCorps Tutoring and is a mentor to incoming Indiana University freshmen.
One of Ahonen’s most memorable experiences of the summer includes the opportunity to observe the investigators and attorneys from the Securities Division interview personnel who were in some way attached to the legal cases the division was working on at that point.
“The fellowship program is valuable because it has exposed me to the inner-workings of government at the state level, while additionally exposing me to the legal environment,” Ahonen said. “It’s an opportunity rarely afforded to an undergraduate student. “
A 2007 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Ahonen is the son of Mark and Brenda Ahonen. He will graduate from Indiana University in 2010 and plans to attend law school in the future.
