Opportunity offers current Purdue University senior chance to experience state government
(Indianapolis) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased to announce that Brett Highley
of Mt. Vernon is currently completing his office’s 2010 Fellowship Program. The summer-long
program selects college and university students from around the state and allows them the
opportunity to experience state government first-hand through the Secretary of State’s office.
“Brett has shown an extraordinary amount of dedication and innovation that I feel will help him to guide our state and country in future years,” said Secretary Rokita. “He embodies the type of distinguished students we have here in Indiana, and I’m excited to have him be an integral part of our office for the summer.”
Highley is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science and is a member of the Liberal Arts Student Council. In his free time he enjoys watching and playing sports.
Since beginning the fellowship, Highley has been working with Secretary Rokita’s Dealer Services Division learning about their policies, procedures and services for dealerships and constituents.
Through the remainder of the fellowship, Highley will rotate among all four division of the Secretary of State and have the opportunity to meet with other elected officials.
What attracts Highley most to working in state government is the sense of accountability state officials and employees hold to their constituents.
“There is a sense that even the most routine and facile enterprises may affect the lives of individuals directly, which is a great privilege that motivates one to operate as efficiently as possible,” said Highley.
A 2007 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Highley is the son of Jerry and Susie Highley. He will graduate from Purdue University in May of 2011 and plans to attend either graduate or law school.
