Secretary Rokita calls for increased awareness of Oct. 4 voter registration deadline and election registration resources like online voter registration
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is reminding Hoosiers of the approaching Oct. 4 voter registration deadline and encouraging those not yet registered to complete or download a registration form online at http://www.indianavoters.com/.
“September is dedicated to raising awareness about the Oct. 4 voter registration deadline and highlighting the many tools available to voters including our new online registration option,” Secretary Rokita said. “National Voter Registration Month helps drive home the message that every voter and every vote counts.”
According to U.S. Census figures, 60 million eligible voters did not register to vote in 2008. Of the non-voters that year, 14 percent said they did not vote because they missed their state’s voter registration deadline.
Indiana offers several ways for individuals to register to vote including online at http://www.indianavoters.com/, at any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch when they complete a driver’s license or state identification card transaction, mailing in a traditional paper form or by visiting their local county clerk’s office.
“So far at IndianaVoters.com, more than 4,370 individuals have either registered to vote or updated their information since the tool was launched July 1,” Secretary Rokita said. “Not only can a person register to vote at the website, but can also find out who’s on their ballot, locate their polling place and view campaign finance records of specific candidates.”
According to the National Association of Secretaries of State, Indiana is one of only eight states allowing voter registration and registration updates via the Internet. Forty states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, offer voter registration lookups designed to help voters check their registration status online.
Secretary Rokita also urges individuals to visit www.sos.in.gov/elections to learn more about Election Day and other important voter information.
