Secretary White seeks to continue strong economic, cultural bond with Taiwan
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 4, 2011) – Aiming to continue Indiana’s strong economic and cultural bond with Taiwan, Indiana Secretary of State Charles P. White welcomed today representatives from the Chicago-based Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO).
“Our relationship with Taiwan is one of fostering economic growth, creative solutions and mutual success for both of our communities,” White said. “Today’s meeting strengthened our relationship and reaffirmed our objectives toward the continual improvement of both Indiana and Taiwan.”
TECO-Chicago, a branch of the main office headquartered in Washington D.C., serves Taiwan citizens in the Midwest and the interests of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The goal of the organization is to expand and strengthen economic, cultural and other ties to the Midwest. Additionally, the group tries to enhance mutual cooperation and security between Taiwan and the United States.
Indiana established the sister-state relationship with Taiwan province in 1979. Additionally, there are numerous sister-city relationships between Taiwanese and Hoosier cities. While the overseas relationship was based on economic and cultural bonds, throughout the years the Secretary of State’s office in partnership with the other state agencies created an educational partnership with the country, as well.
In 2004, the Secretary of State’s office was instrumental in organizing the first international teacher exchange between Indiana and Taiwan. A delegation of Indiana school leaders was hosted by the Taiwan Ministry of Education for the 2008 American Superintendents/Educators' Project on Chinese Language Teacher Recruitment and Sister School Partnerships.
Additionally, because of the ongoing framework of the international exchange, Indiana students and school communities are benefiting from the teaching of Mandarin Chinese language and culture.
