Notary commissions are issued for eight (8) years. The filing fee totals $11.22. You must acquire a $5,000 bond prior to completing the application.

Governor Holcomb signed Senate Bill 372 into law on March 13, 2018. This law will permit Indiana notaries public in to perform remote notarizations after July 1, 2019. Notaries public who wish to become remote notaries public will complete a separate registration and pay an additional fee amount of $5. Before applying to become a remote notary you must first be a commissioned Indiana Notary Public. There will also be an additional education component to become a remote notary public. Please know that to conduct remote notarization services, you must be physically located within Indiana.
The Secretary of State’s office will approve technology vendors who meet the requirements under the law. A remote notary public then will be able to select a technology vendor to work with to provide remote notarization services. Please stay tuned for more information about the remote notary public registration process. The remote notarization application will not be available until July 1, 2019.
What is remote notarization anyway?
Here is a summary of the ways a document can be notarized in Indiana. While traditional and electronic notarizations can be currently performed, remote notarizations will not be authorized or valid until July 2019.
Traditional/paper notarization: signer appears in person before the notary public and the notarial act and signatures are captured on a paper record.
Electronic notarization: signer appears in person before the notary public and the notarial act and signatures are captured on an electronic record.
Remote notarization: signer appears before the remote notary public by two-way audio visual communication and the notarial act and signatures are captured on an electronic record.
Remote notarization will allow Indiana remote notaries to conduct notarizations without leaving their homes and will be a useful tool to our veterans overseas, who may need to have a document notarized for use back at home. Indiana is now one of five states that will allow its notaries to perform remote notarizations after the law takes effect in 2019.
