Hamilton, Rokita to discuss electoral reform

Retired Congressman Lee Hamilton, who served on the Carter-Baker Commission on Federal Election Reform, will share his insights on the Commission's findings at a gathering of state and local officials on October 6, 2005. Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita will also offer his perspectives on the progress of election reform in Indiana. The program is co-sponsored by Sagamore Institute for Policy Research and the Center on Congress, which Hamilton founded upon his retirement from Congress.

The Commission released its report to the public on September 19, 2005. (To access the report, visit www.american.edu/ia/cfer.) Among its recommendations are:

  • implementation of uniform voter-registration systems
  • consistent use of voter ID cards
  • state-to-state registration "interoperability"
  • better maintenance of voter lists
  • special care for military and overseas ballots
  • re-enfranchisement of ex-felons
  • more responsible handling and release of exit-polling data

Media are welcome to attend the event on October 6, 2005 from 1:00-3:00pm at the One America Tower Conference Center, TTC 212 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
