Helping the SECC is 'easy as pie'

A longtime Indiana State Personnel Department (INSPD) tradition continues this month with a (literally!) sweet fundraiser intended to help a trio of charities.

Employee Relations Administrative Assistant Judy Gill said this year’s Gray Bros. Pie Sale is currently underway with orders for whole pies now being accepted through Oct. 19. The cost is $25 for each and payment must be made at the time of order. You can also pre-order six slices of different pies for that same whole-pie price of $25. That’s a savings on the price of six slices purchased at the event. The event itself is slated for Oct. 31, outside of IGC-S room W161 and in the lobby of IGC-N.

Judy said the pie sale began in 2004 under the direction of Employee Relations Director Bruce Baxter and has remained a sort of institution for the department throughout the years. Some changes have been made, including the opportunity for buyers to donate $5 and pick a charity. The biggest vote getter will receive the largest amount.

Judy remains the primary organizer, but she credits her colleagues with making the fun event a success each season.

“We’re all involved in some capacity or another,” she said. “These are just some of the greatest people to work with. I couldn’t do it without my co-workers.”

The biggest beneficiaries, of course, are charitable institutions. Judy said the 2017 sale raised more than $1,500 for organizations aimed at helping people with cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. The same three organizations will benefit this year.

Pie buyers can choose which organization will receive their donation as well.

And that, in essence, is what the event is all about – making a donation toward a great cause. Receiving a delicious slice of a renowned Hoosier treat is just an added bonus; it’s the whipped cream on top of a perfect pumpkin pie.

Speaking of pie types, Judy said chocolate crème, apple, cherry, pecan and numerous others – including a few sugar-free offerings – are available this year. There’s a pie for every taste, so make certain to check out the sale Oct. 31 or place your order by Oct. 19.
