Students who have been denied state financial aid awards may appeal that decision with the Division of Student Financial Aid (SFA).
Documented appeals (click HERE for more information about supporting documentation) in the following categories will be considered:
- Appeals for late FAFSA filing (FAFSA filed after March 10 Indiana filing deadline)
- Death of an immediate family member* that occurs within 30 days of the filing deadline
- Serious illness of the student or an immediate family member that occurs within 30 days of the filing deadline
- Active duty military service by the student that prevents the student from filing by the deadline
- Appeals for late edit corrections (Edits corrected after May 15 Indiana edit correction deadline)
- Death of an immediate family member* that occurs within 30 days of the edit correction deadline
- Serious illness of the student or an immediate family member that occurs within 30 days of the edit correction deadline
- Active duty military service by the student that prevents the student from correcting edits by the deadline
- For example, student has been an Indiana resident since December 31 of the prior year and will remain an Indiana resident in the current year and throughout the academic year of the financial aid award.
- For example, a parent of a dependent student has been an Indiana resident since December 31 of the prior year and will remain an Indiana resident in the current year and throughout the academic year of the financial aid award.
- Residency appeals must be resolved before the edit correction deadline of May 15 unless the student also can provide supporting documentation of extenuating circumstances which prevented him or her from meeting this deadline.

- For example, student did not matriculate to college within 2 years of his or her high school graduation as required by program rules.
- For example, student did not file a FAFSA each year as required by the program rules in order to remain a Scholar.
*Immediate family member is defined as a student's spouse, child, parent, grandparent or sibling.
NOTE: Appeals are most often denied for the following reasons:
- Lack of supporting documentation
- Student or parent simply forgot or did not know the deadline or program requirements.
- Matter is unappealable at the state level (Students may wish to speak with the financial aid office about appeals or professional judgments at the institution level.)
- Institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements
- Parent Contribution (PC) or Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculations
- Dependency status
How to Appeal
- Student submits an Appeal Form and all supporting documentation to the Appeals Committee via one of the following:

- The appeal is reviewed by the Appeals Committee.
- Student is notified of the Committee's decision via email at the email address listed on the Appeal Form.
The appeal process takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks from receipt of the completed form and documentation. In order to receive state financial aid for a particular term, the appeal must be received and processed before the end of that term. Appeals approved after the end of a term will only apply to future terms in the academic year. Submitting an appeal without the required supporting documentation will delay the appeal review process.
