Quaint destinations

The Ohio River Scenic Byway runs 967 miles through three states, with 303 beautiful miles waiting for you in Indiana. Make it a relaxing historic tour, an exhilarating adventure or something in between. Three charming historic towns along the Scenic Byway are Vevay, Madison and Newburgh. Each offers antiques, artisans, relaxing B&Bs, quaint restaurants and beautiful views of the river.

Named 4th Coolest Small Town in America by Budget Travel, Vevay is sure to please. One reason is the Belterra Casino & Resort, where you can treat yourself to spa services, a round of golf and try your luck at Vegas-style gaming. Another reason is the Schenck Mansion Bed & Breakfast, originally built by a riverboat captain, which has become one of the top 30 bed and breakfasts in the nation according to Midwest Living magazine. Nearby, breeze through the trees on a zipline at Dagaz Acres

For a little bit of history in Madison, visit the Madison Railroad Station and Dr. William Hutchings Office & Hospital – fall is a perfect time to see the skeleton in his closet! Don’t miss the premier outdoor juried art festival at the Madison Chautauqua if you’re there Sept. 27-28. Plan to visit the Thomas Family Winery. They take the “family” part of their name seriously, continuing the tradition of pressing hard cider that was started by their grandfather Gale Thomas during prohibition. Drink Gale’s Hard Cider – made from Midwest apples – as you would any ale. The winery is housed in a three-story former livery stable and blacksmith shop built in the 1850s. Stay in the lodge or rough it at the campground of Clifty Falls State Park, where you can take in the deep limestone gorges and waterfalls along the hiking trails.

Enjoy the views from the riverfront walkway or restaurants in historic Newburgh. Grab eats at The Tin Fish and Edgewater Grille; both serve up delicious seafood options. Bring your clubs and try one of the top 25 Best Golf Courses in the Nation as rated by Golf Digest - Victoria National Golf Club. Shop the historic downtown for books, antiques and home décor and accessories items.
