Whether registering your vehicle for the first time or renewing your registration, you will pay an annual excise tax and a registration fee. Passenger vehicles and recreational vehicles have separate vehicle excise tax rates.

Customers living in certain counties and municipalities will also pay a county and municipal vehicle excise tax or wheel tax.

Passenger Vehicle Excise Tax Fees

The excise tax amount is based on the vehicle class and age. The age of a vehicle is determined by subtracting the model year from the calendar year that the vehicle is due to be registered. The class of a vehicle is based on the vehicle value as determined by the manufacturer’s original retail price.

Vehicle Excise Tax - Motor Driven Cycle (MDC)
Vehicle Excise Tax – Flat Rate $12

Model year 1980 or older passenger vehicles, trucks with a declared gross weight of not more than 11,000 pounds and motorcycles are charged a flat rate vehicle excise tax of $12.00.
Military Vehicles
Vehicles registered as military vehicles are charged a flat rate vehicle excise tax of $8.00.
Trailers
Trailers with a declared gross weight of 9,000 pounds or less are charged a flat rate vehicle excise tax of $8.00
