Press release: Newton County oral argument

For Immediate Release | September 6, 2024

Supreme Court to hold oral argument in Newton County

The Indiana Supreme Court will travel to South Newton High School in Newton County on Tuesday, October 1. The Court will hold oral argument in Kiera Isgrig v. Trustees of Indiana University (24S-CT-00158), a premises liability case concerning Isgrig’s claim that she was injured when a window at Indiana University fell on her head.

The Court regularly holds oral arguments at the Statehouse in Indianapolis and occasionally schedules arguments outside the capital. Traveling oral arguments allow students, the press, and the public in other areas of the state the opportunity to see the work of the Court. This argument is being held in Justice Derek Molter’s home county, at the high school he attended.

The argument will take place in South Newton High School’s Main Gym at 13102 South 50 East, Kentland, Indiana 47951 at 9:30 a.m. (Central). The 40-minute argument is open to the press and public. Available seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending will be required to enter through door 4 from the main parking lot and go through security. Parking for guests is available in the main school parking lot to the east of the school.

Over 700 students from the following schools are scheduled to attend:

  • Benton Central Jr-Sr High School
  • Frontier Jr-Sr High School
  • North Newton Jr-Sr High School
  • North White High School
  • South Newton Senior High School
  • Tri-County Jr/Sr High School
  • Twin Lakes Senior High School

Press are welcome to attend in person to videotape/photograph the argument. There are rules to establish decorum. Adjustments will be made to account for the location. Press interested in attending must contact Sarah.Kidwell@courts.in.gov by Friday, September 20 at noon (Eastern).

The argument will be webcast live and archived on the Court’s website. South Newton High School is accessible to those with disabilities, and accessible parking is available. Individuals needing special accommodations should contact Sarah.Kidwell@courts.in.gov.
