Operation Hoosier Relief

Daily Update – Day 17

September 19, 2005

Mission Assignments:

  • The second deployment at Camp Indiana is fully operational.

  • Members of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and National Guard deployments participated in the rededication of a historic Civil War-era cemetery.  Team members cleared the cemetery of storm debris, replaced grave markers, and even recovered historic artifacts.

  • DNR continued marine patrols and recovery efforts along local waterways.

  • 20 Indiana State Police officers continued patrolling Biloxi.  The team handled more than a dozen incidents including curfew violations and traffic stops, among other things.

  • Medical teams treated approximately 1,000 patients and administered over 225 inoculations.  The teams also continued door-to-door medical visits to people not able to visit a medical clinic.

  • The Eli Lilly logistical support team began coordinating supply shipments between the Harrison County Emergency Operations Center and Gulfport Hospital.

  • Hoosier Helper crews covered 320 miles and assisted 32 motorists.

Evacuee Assistance:

  • Indiana is currently home to an estimated 4,200 evacuees.

  • By the end of today, approximately 17 guests will remain at the Red Cross Shelter at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

  • Indiana is encouraging all evacuees residing in Indiana to call the following toll-free number to register with the state and make themselves available for state assistance – 866-679-4631.
