Indiana gonorrhea morbidity has been stable for the past 5 years. In 2000, the incidence rate for Blacks decreased slightly from 840 to 830. This decrease occurred despite an overall increase in total morbidity from 1999. Figure Gon1 shows the number of cases of gonorrhea in Indiana for the last 5 years.
From 1999 to 2000, the only age group to show any significant reduction was ages 15-19, with a reduction of nearly 200 cases of gonorrhea. As with Chlamydia, those ages 15-24 have the highest incidence rate, as is illustrated in Figure Gon2.
Very few cases of penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) were reported prior to 1989. In 1990, all public STD clinics in Indiana as well as family planning clinics began to treat gonorrhea with non-penicillin regimens. The decrease in the proportion of PPNG isolates may reflect this change in treatment.
Table Gon1 shows the gonorrhea cases and rates by metropolitan area for three of the counties with the highest incidence: Allen, Lake, and Marion Counties. Although these counties comprise only 28% of the population, they account for 67% of the reported cases in 2000. Figure Gon3 is a map of Indiana showing the case rates per 100,000 population for 2000.
