INDIANA MARRIAGE REPORT
2004
Highlights
- There were 43,496 marriages performed in Indiana in 2004.
- Marriages occurred most frequently in the months of July (5,336
or 12.3%), June (5,326 or 12.2%), October (4,567 or 10.5%), and
May (4,554 or 10.4%). For details, please see Table 1.
- Overall, more marriages occurred on Saturday (57.3%) than on
any other day of the week. However, civil marriages were more
likely to occur on Friday, while religious marriages were more
likely to occur on Saturday. For details, please see Table 2.
- The average age at marriage for brides and grooms who had never
been married before was 25.0 and 26.8 years, respectively.
For the white population, the bride's average age at first marriage
was 24.5, while the groom's average age at first marriage was 26.4.
For the black population, the bride's average age at first marriage
was 29.9, and the groom's average age at first marriage was 30.7.

- Only 51.0 percent of marriages were first marriages for both the
bride and the groom; 24.0 percent of marriages were subsequent to a
divorce for both the bride and the groom. In another 23.0
percent of marriages, either the bride or the groom had been
previously divorced. In 4.9 percent of marriages, the bride,
the groom, or both had been previously widowed. For details,

- In Indiana in 2004, 11.4 percent of marriages were second marriages
for both the bride and the groom; 8.1 percent were first marriages
for the bride and second marriages for the groom; 8.0 percent were
first marriages for the groom and second marriages for the bride.
