Legacy Projects > The Potawatomi and the Miami in the Removal Period The Potawatomi and the Miami in the Removal Period

The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library plans to have Dr. Mark Schurr, Professor of Anthropology at Notre Dame University, present a program detailing the Potawatomi and the Miami in the Removal Period.

The Removal period (from A.D. 1795 to about 1840) saw the demise of the fur trade and the development of new ways of life as Native Americans adapted to dramatic economic, social, political, and ecological changes. Investigations of Potawatomi and Miami Removal Period sites in the Midwest have provided new data that highlight the diversity of Native American responses.

This project will allow people of all ages to learn about St. Joseph County at the time when Indiana entered statehood.
