The White River was, and still is, an important natural resource for Owen County. In its territory days, settlements were built along the banks of the river. Flatboats were the primary, and in some cases, only source of goods and communication from the outside world. To this day, remains of flatboat crossings can still be found across the country. The purpose of the Flatboat Experience is to provide a living lesson for children and adults about this early and importance means of commercial transportation.
Take a journey back in time 100+ years, when flatboats piled the White River carrying goods from Owen County towns and settlements to major population centers down the White, Wabash, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Trips will be available at Spencer’s Apple Butter Festival, Gosport’s Lazy Days Festival and other Owen County Bicentennial Celebrations.
