Legacy Projects > Flora Depot Restoration Project Flora Depot Restoration Project

The Flora Depot was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1908. Its history includes service during the railroad’s heyday, a spectacular wreck, service as a Laundromat, a terrible fire, years of neglect, an important endorsement, and a fateful convergence of events, volunteers and organizations that resulted in its rescue in 2013. Reconstruction and restoration are projected to begin in 2016. The Flora Depot will serve as a welcome center, and local history and transportation museum. It will be Flora’s niche in Carroll County’s flourishing tourism plans. While the depot’s restoration is a daunting task, the effort speaks to the importance of saving our rural legacy, and passing that joy to future generations.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Melissa Bishop

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • The historic 1908 Flora Depot exterior was successfully reconstructed and restored on a site directly opposite of where it originally stood next to the tracks in downtown Flora. That this vision became a reality has been a source of inspiration for local residents.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • The Flora Depot Restoration Project’s recognized potential as one of the many and varied reasons to explore history, arts and culture in Carroll County and the Greater Lafayette area was demonstrated on October 14, 2105 when Flora Main Street was awarded a North Central Health Services Capital Grant, administered by the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, in the amount of $150,625.92 for Phase I of the Flora Depot Restoration Project, the reconstruction and restoration of the exterior.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • Artifacts are being held by individuals until they can be displayed. The Carroll County Historical Museum also houses artifacts that will be given to the Flora Depot. Photos and other information and documentation are housed at the Flora Public Library.
