Dr. Henry Greist and his wife Mollie (Ward) Greist, RN opened the first hospital in Monticello. They served 17 years doing mission work and attended to the spiritual and medical needs of the Inuit Eskimo people. Miss Lillie Bailey was also a local White County woman who followed the Greist family to Barrow as a reliable household organizer, chef and child caregiver. The White County Historical Society has already published a 600 page account of their mission work. This photo album will supplement the published work and provide the reader with firsthand accounts by David Greist, who was age 2 when he accompanied his parents on this perilous journey.
The photo album will be an educational tool that will be a visual account of the work of one of White County’s most prominent families. David is still living at age 95. His son John is sitting down with his father and making notes on each of the 1,500 historic photos.
